If chrysanthemums bloom in the autumn, it is because they are short-day plants. Hubert, the gardener, invites you to plant them early in the season, whether in containers or in the garden, to enjoy their beauty for as long as possible before the severe frosts of winter arrive. *Where to Plant Chrysanthemums?* There are multiple varieties of chrysanthemums: large-headed, pomponettes (known as florist's chrysanthemums), American (also called autumn daisies)... Hubert Fontaine presents two methods to install chrysanthemums at home: *Planting Chrysanthemums in Containers* These plants have the unique ability to withstand temperatures just below 0°C. Take advantage of this trait! 1. Choose chrysanthemums in small pots. 2. Plant the flowers in a staggered pattern. 3. Combine them with sedums, which are also short-day plants, like asters. 4. Water them as you would pansies, forget-me-nots, or geraniums, quite simply. *Note:* Hubert collected sedum flowers from his garden. Even cut, these flowers, when replanted in soil, will root and thrive as well as chrysanthemums. *Planting a Chrysanthemum in the Garden* Planting a pomponette outside allows you to enjoy its beauty year after year. This small chrysanthemum will continue to bloom throughout the autumn and reappear the following year. 1. Thoroughly soak the pot by placing it in a water-filled basin before removing the plant. 2. Remove the plant from its pot. 3. Place it at the bottom of the planting hole. 4. Bring the soil back around it. 5. Water the plant. 6. Arrange leaves as mulch around the base. *Note:* When severe frost occurs, the flowers will die off. Cut back the dead stems and then spread the mulch leaves to protect the base. The chrysanthemum will survive outdoors throughout the winter. In the spring, you can choose to divide the base or leave it in place. Flowers will reach a height of 50 to 60 cm. This technique ensures blooms by the following autumn, starting in October.
