SC Board of Education Delays Decision on 10 Challenged Books

On April 1, 2025, the State Board of Education met to decide on 10 books challenged by a single resident of Beaufort County. The Instructional Materials Review Committee had voted to remove all 10 books from every public school in South Carolina. However, after half an hour of public testimony in which five members of the public spoke in favor of retaining the books and/ or amending the process, and one member of the public spoke in favor of removing them, the Board discussed the issues with the regulation requiring the removal of the books. After a motion by Jacqueline Lynn to delay the decision, the Board voted not to decide on the books at this time. They will likely be considered for removal again next month.
