Installing the governor unit. This video is in essence 'part four' of the 'How to remove the governor and change governor seals' videos on my channel which can be found here; Part 1 • How to replace ZF- 4HP18 governor seals. P... Part 2 • How to replace ZF4-HP18 governor seals. Pa... Part 3 • How to replace ZF4-HP18 governor seals. Pa... How to fit the governor unit. Almost forgot to upload the video showing how to install the governor unit once it has new seals fitted. So here it is. Where as my previous videos showing removal of governor unit took place with the engine and transmission still fitted to the car, this video shows the governor being refitted with the transmission out of the car. Reason for this is simple - The replacement gearbox turned out to be faulty (low system pressure) so I sold the car on as spares or repair. On the Citroen XM, the engine and transmission have to be removed as one unit - however you'll be glad to know that governor seals and the valve block can be removed with engine and box still in situ. You don't need exotic tools to remove and install a governor unit, you just need a good quality shallow socket to remove and tighten the gear retaining bolt, a good torque wrench, parallel punch or pin driver, hammer, brass drift (or piece of hardwood), or a bearing race installer. Since I aim these videos to people who might only have regular tools, then that's what I have used. Please note! A new gear retaining bolt must be used on installation. It has to be threadlocked and torqued up to the correct amount for the length of bolt*. The old bolt has a built in flange washer which is staked into four notches on the gear hub. Reusing the old bolt will weaken its ability to be secured. *Two bolt lengths are used depending on the age and what car the transmission is fitted to. Check your repair manual. A 24mm long bolt which is torqued to 150 Nm or 110 ft.Ibs A 70mm long bolt which is torqued to 170 Nm or 124.7 ft.Ibs. The example in the video is a 24mm long bolt.
