The Pint-Sized Survivalists: Setting Up a Tiny January Swarm 🐝 Apiary Set up 3rd Jan 2025 January in St Ives has blessed us with an spring—blue skies, zero wind, and glorious sunshine! It’s the perfect day to get some heavy lifting done in the apiary. In today’s video, I’m getting the apiary in order, stacking blocks to get the hives off the Cornish ground ready for swarm collection. I also talk about why I choose to face my hive entrances South to catch every bit of that winter sun. ☀️ The Main Event, I finally get my chair back! 😂 I’m moving a small Poly Nuc of bees that I collected just yesterday. This little colony is tiny—hardly a pint of bees in there. They have a few eggs and a couple of grubs, but absolutely zero stores. Because I’m worried about their ability to stay warm, I’m using a bit of "beekeeper's magic" (tin foil) over the top of the colony to help them reflect their heat back down. Watch as I open them up for their very first orientation flight in their new neighbourhood. Even though they are small, they are incredibly placid, lovely bees. They were pouring out to see the sunshine! In this video, 🧱 Raising hives off the ground to combat humidity. 🧭 Why South-facing entrances matter in winter. 🛡️ Using insulation and foil for tiny colonies. 🍯 Emergency feeding (Syrup) for colonies with no stores. ✈️ First orientation flights.
