This is our second year living in Malaysia, and we've now experienced two Hari Raya celebrations — both spent in the homes of complete strangers. The first was last year in Langkawi, and this year, it happened in Penang. When a stranger invites you to their home for a festive meal, most foreigners would be surprised — maybe even a little unsure. But once you're actually sitting in their living room, sharing food and stories, that feeling quickly turns into something deeper: a genuine sense of warmth and connection. These generous hosts didn’t just treat us as guests — they welcomed us like close friends. They lovingly prepared traditional Raya dishes, gave our child a festive "duit raya" packet, and made sure we felt completely at home. Many people say Malaysia is one of the friendliest and most hospitable countries in the world. And it's true — if you’ve ever lost faith in people or in the goodness of humanity, come live in Malaysia for a while. It just might restore your heart.
