Another unapologetic throwback to the ’90s—because let’s be real, that’s one era a lot of us refuse to let go of. We sit down with Jossie Harris Thacker as she takes us back to the dance floors, the culture, and the moments that launched her career. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Harlem, Jossie wasn’t even into dance growing up. Her first inspiration came from watching Debbie Allen, but it was the music—and the energy of the DJs—that pulled her in. Following the hottest DJs meant following the style, the movement, and the blueprint for how people learned to dance before social media ever existed. Her path into professional dancing wasn’t planned. While working on Wall Street, Jossie was approached during a night out and asked to appear in a dance video—an unexpected moment that changed everything. From there, she went on to work with some of the biggest names in music, including Mary J. Blige, Color Me Badd, Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson. Her favorite moment? Dancing with Michael on "Remember the Time”—a cultural reset that still holds weight today. Jossie also opens up about being a trendsetter—how her style helped shape fashion and why becoming a Fly Girl felt inevitable. But she doesn’t shy away from the harder truth either. As music and visuals began to shift, she noticed women being treated less like artists and more like objects. That realization pushed her to exit the music video world altogether. That decision led her to acting—where she found lasting success on her own terms. Looking back, Jossie reflects on the ’90s as a rare moment when Black creatives fully owned their Blackness—boldly, freely, and without apology. And that’s exactly why this era still hits different.
