Just had your wisdom teeth removed? Proper aftercare is critical to prevent dry socket, infection, excessive bleeding, and prolonged pain. In this video, Dr. Ralph Reynolds of Reynolds Oral and Facial Surgery explains exactly what to do after wisdom teeth extraction surgery, including bleeding control, swelling reduction, pain management, diet recommendations, and how to protect your blood clots during healing. If you’re searching for: Wisdom teeth removal recovery tips How to stop bleeding after tooth extraction How to prevent dry socket What to eat after wisdom teeth removal When to brush after wisdom teeth surgery Swelling after tooth extraction Pain control after oral surgery This guide covers everything you need to know. 🩸 Managing Bleeding After Wisdom Teeth Removal After surgery, you will leave with gauze placed over the extraction sites. ✔ Remove gauze after 45 minutes ✔ Replace only if active bleeding continues ✔ Bite firmly to apply pressure (gauze is for compression, not absorption) ✔ Call our office if heavy bleeding persists Proper gauze placement is critical — it should be positioned toward the back and cheek side of the mouth where incisions are located. 🚫 How to Prevent Dry Socket For the first 72 hours, protect your blood clots: Do NOT use a straw Do NOT spit forcefully Do NOT rinse vigorously Avoid smoking or nicotine for at least one week Dislodging the clot can lead to dry socket, a painful complication after tooth extraction. On day four, you may begin more vigorous rinsing and resume using a straw if needed. 🪥 Brushing & Rinsing Instructions First 24 hours: Do NOT brush or rinse After 24 hours: Resume gentle brushing Use prescribed mouth rinse (Peridex or similar) Use room temperature saltwater rinses Tilt your head side-to-side instead of swishing Gentle care promotes faster healing and reduces infection risk. 🧊 Reducing Swelling & Bruising Swelling typically increases for the first three days, with day three often being the peak. To reduce swelling: ✔ Use the provided Coolpacks ✔ Wear the facial compression band full-time on day one ✔ Rotate cold packs while keeping compression in place This helps minimize swelling, bruising, and hematoma formation. 🍲 What to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Surgery First 24 hours: Cool, soft, pureed foods (smoothies — no straw) Day 2: Warm, soft foods After Day 5: Resume normal diet Avoid chewing directly on surgical sites until healed Always follow the approved food list provided on your post-op instruction sheet. 💊 Pain Management After Wisdom Teeth Removal You may be prescribed: Ibuprofen Hydrocodone with acetaminophen (Norco) Recommended first-line pain control (if no restrictions): 500mg Tylenol 800mg Ibuprofen Every 8 hours (follow your written dosage limits carefully) ⚠ Hydrocodone is for breakthrough pain only and should not be taken while driving, working, or attending school. Take medications with food and drink plenty of water. 😬 Jaw Stretches & Preventing Limited Opening Starting the day after surgery: Open your mouth wide Move your jaw side-to-side Perform stretches 3–4 times daily This prevents jaw stiffness and limited opening during recovery. 📞 Questions After Surgery?
