THE CURATOR

Synopsis: In this darkly brooding claymation video, an anguished curator alone in his gallery ruminates on the Covid crisis. Using puppetry -- an art form long-revered in his hometown of Bratislava, Slovakia -- Polivka creates a compelling statement about contemporary art's current predicament. The curator remembers the words of the influential, young French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux who postulates a world outside us, capable of bringing forth monsters. The art world’s fascination with “Object-Oriented Ontology” and “Speculative Realism” is reflected in historian Maria Stavranaki’s 2020 exhibition at the Pompidou, Pre-Histoire, demonstrating how the discovery of deep geologic time in the 19th Century influenced Modern Art. The existence of an almost unfathomable gulf of time before the appearance of human beings on the planet is a major theme of Meillassoux’s After Finitiude. Our troubled curator’s expression says it all --- he is suspended between the cosmic time of geologic pre-history, and the brave new world of projections and simulacrums described by Hito Steryl in The Wretched of the Screen. Is a statue of a Pokemon sufficient in these new circumstances? After a good night’s sleep, maybe he will have an epiphany about his next exhibition. A magical stone resembling a human heart holds the promise of a new dawn. SCRIPT THE CURATOR (Engl.) If we look through the aperture which we have opened up onto the absolute, what we see there is a rather menacing power capable of destroying both things and worlds, of realizing every dream, but also every nightmare. How can I stage participatory events when the gallery is closed due to Covid19? The virus is a malevolent and meaningless manifestation of what Quentin Meillassoux calls, the universe’s “power to bring forth monstrous absurdities.” The virus is just another thing-among-things in the world  described by Speculative Realism and Object-Oriented Ontology. But existential angst is not so easily wished away. There will be exhibitions of stones and stars realizing every dream. There is hidden in this ancient stone a new dimension of time, opened up by the discovery of so-called pre-history in the 19th Century -- geologic time on a gargantuan scale.   This has created a new metaphysical concept of the world.  Deep time is found in the fossil record. The geologic past is a yawning, incomprehensible chasm of time. But Maria Savranaki says it gave birth to Modernism. I suppose it is similar to the discovery that the earth was not flat, or that the sun did not revolve around the Earth. Now that the entire planet has been mapped -- the only terra incognita left is the past. I am suspended between the deep, geologic past -- and a dream of progress, of simulacrums, screens, projections, replications, networks of connections -- an electronic conviviality to supersede Relational Aesthetics.  But art is not pure. Free labor and exploitation are the invisible dark matter that keeps the cultural sector going. And the profane rapture of consumption.That’s enough meta-critique for now. I am sure that with a good night’s rest, I will come up with an idea for my next exhibition. KURATOR (Slov.) Ked sa pozrieme cez otvor v objektive, ktory sme si nastavili pri hladani absolutna, tak to co tam vidime je skor hroziva sila schopna znicit veci a svety, umoznujuca zralizovat kazdy sen, ale aj kazdu nocnu moru. Ako mozem zinscenovat participacne podujatie ked galeria je zatvorena z dovodu Covidu19? Virus je len zlomyselna a bezvyznamna manifestacia toho, co Quentin Meillassoux nazyva vesmirnou “schopnostou sposobovat monstrozne absurdity.” Virus je len dalsou vecickou sveta popisanou Spekulativnym Realizmom a Objekt Orientovanou Ontologiou. Avsak existencneho strachu sa neda len tak lahko zbavit. Budu sa robit vystavy kamenov a hviezd, schopnych splnit kazdy nas sen. V tomto starovekom kameni je skryta dimenzia casu, ktora sa otvorila objavenim takzvanej predhistorie 19-teho storocia - ide o geologicky cas gargantualnych rozmerov. Tento jav vytvoril novy metafyzicky koncept sveta. Rozmer casu je zachyteny vo fosilnych zaznamoch. Geologicka minulost je zivajuca a nezrozumitelna casova priepast. Avsak Maria Savranaki sa domnieva ze prave z tohoto sa zrodil Modernizmus. Myslim si, ze ide o podobny objav ako ten, ze zem nie je plocha alebo ze slnko neobieha okolo zeme. Teraz, ked cela zemegula je zmapovana, jedina terra incognita, ktora nam zostalo je MINULOST. Visim medzi hlbokou geologickou minulostou a snivanim o progrese, o rozvoji simulakier, obrazoviek, projekcii, replik, spojov, networkov, skratka ide o elekronicku zabavku, ktora nahradi tzv.relacnu estetiku. Ale ani umenie nie je ciste! Lacna pracovna sila a vykoristovanie su neviditelnymi ciernymi substanciami, ktore davaju do chodu kulturny sektor a hlboku konzumnu extazu. Ale dost uz meta-kritiky. Som si isty, ze ked sa dobre vyspim, pridem na to, aka bude ta dalsia vystava. Text copyright @ Rob Mintz
