Hikebytes | Exploring a No-Name Volcanic Butte in Central Oregon ❄️ In this off-trail winter snow hiking adventure in Central Oregon, we scramble to a no-name volcanic butte discovered on Google Earth while searching for new places to explore. Hiking through six inches of fresh snow, this raw challenge backcountry journey takes us into untouched volcanic terrain with no established trail, offering solitude, privacy, and true wilderness exploration in perfect winter conditions. We set out on an adventure through raw terrain in what turned out to be a true winter wonderland. No paths. No crowds. Just quiet snow, volcanic rock, and wide-open space. Along the hike, I open up about my fear of snow — and how knowledge, preparation, and hiking with experienced family explorers helped me turn that fear into respect and confidence. I made friends with snow this hike. Snow can be beautiful, but it’s also unpredictable, and that’s where experience matters. We explore two separate butte peaks, and by the end of the journey the landscape completely transforms. The butte has completely split, revealing dramatic cliff edges and 360-degree panoramic views of distant mountain ranges and scattered volcanic buttes stretching endlessly across the horizon. Throughout the hike, we share: *Different types of snow and how they behave *How freeze–thaw cycles create hidden winter hiking dangers *Why proper snow hiking gear and traction matter *How wisdom passed down from experienced hikers can be life-saving We also discuss an almost tragic family story — my father being stuck in a snow drift in Colorado for an extended time — a real reminder that snow demands respect, even on calm days. Snow isn’t dangerous by default — but it is unforgiving if you don’t understand it. Know before you go hiking in the snow. Knowledge is key.
