Welcome to Poetry Changes Lives– where we explore the power of words to move, inspire, and uplift. Here is one of the most remarkable poems written during World War II - Today, I read one of the most moving poems of the 20th century: "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee, a young Anglo-American Spitfire pilot who wrote this now-famous sonnet, shortly before he died - during World War II. Magee’s words have echoed through history – even engraved on memorials and quoted by U.S. Presidents. His poem captures the spiritual ecstasy of flight and the incredible awe of soaring above the clouds. Magee sent this poem to his family in the United States, written on a postcard. A few days later, he sadly perished in a flying accident. 🌤️ “I’ve topped the wind-swept heights… and touched the face of God.” Written at just 19 years old, this is a poem that has comforted generations. 📖 Today’s thought: Beauty and truth are sometimes born in the face of danger and loss.
