Whale Watching in Gloucester, MA | Tracking a Humpback Whale + Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins

Whale watching has been on our bucket list for a long time and we finally hit the high seas to track some whales 🐋! Cape Ann Whale Watch came recommended by quite a few locals and now we know why. Located in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Cape Ann Whale Watch is among the closest to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and Jeffreys Ledge - the best place to see a variety of marine life along the North Atlantic Coast. Stellwagen Bank is almost 850 square miles and the feeding and migratory grounds to a number of whales and dolphins including humpback whales, fin whales, North Atlantic right whales, sei whales, minke whales, pilot whales, Atlantic white-sided dolphins, common dolphins, harbor porpoises, harbor seals, gray seals, and more! We start our adventure at Jeffreys Ledge where we meet Pinball the humpback whale. While she didn't breech the water this time, we spent 30-40 minutes tracking her as she ate. The amazing naturalist on the boat shared that there is suspicion that Pinball is pregnant given some of her recent feeding habits, which just means we are going to have to head back to Gloucester next year to see if she has a calf! Later on, as we were changing locations to a new feeding ground, a pod of Atlantic-white sided dolphins came to play near the boat and in its wake. We were dazzled by the over 200 dolphins that were frolicking in the waters right next to the boat! You are guaranteed to see whales with Cape Ann Whale Watch (and that's no surprise given the expertise and knowledge of the captain and crew). Be prepared to spend ~3 hours on the water and if you are going in the fall, bundle up! In case you get cold or need a snack, the boat has plenty of options on the lower deck.
