Panel: Indigenous Sculptors Respond: Indigenous (hi)Story, Land, and Belonging in an Era of Anti-Immigration | 2017 International Sculpture Conference: Intersections + Identities in Kansas City, MO. The International Sculpture Center held the 27th International Sculpture Conference: Intersections + Identities from October 25-28, 2017 in Kansas City, MO. The event brought together ISC members, non-members, artists, arts administrators, curators, city planners, educators, art supporters, and students. For information on ISC Conferences, visit https://sculpture.org/mpage/ISCConfer... This panel, Indigenous Sculptors Respond: Indigenous (hi)Story, Land, and Belonging in an Era of Anti-Immigration featured moderator Gerald Clarke, and panelists Bob Houzous, Cannupa Hanska Luger, and Holly Wilson. With the rise of American “nativism” and the anti-immigration movement, America and the popular media has ignored the perspective of Native Americans on the subject. From the time of creation to the present, Native peoples have associated cultural knowledge, traditional stories and the connection to the land as essential to the concept of “belonging”. In this panel, Native American sculptors will present their work and speak to how their work embodies this concept of “belonging”. This event was supported by the following collaborators & sponsors: Architectural Building Systems, Belger Arts Center, Belger Crane Yard Studios, Charlotte Street Foundation, City of Lawrence, Bill & Christy Gautreaux, Kansas City Art Institute, The Kanter Family Foundation, KU School of the Arts, Lawrence Arts Center, Monarch Glass Studio, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, Spencer Museum of Art, Studios Inc., University of Kansas, Visit KC, Wickerson Studios and Zahner.
