Many General Motors cars use a similar AIR Pump and 3 way Catalyst system in the 1980s and early 1990s OBD1 cars. Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile used similar strategies, even though the engines were different. Many, but not all engines used an AIR pump to help the 3 way catalyst in meeting emissions requirements. As time went on and engine emission control development continued, more OBD1 systems stopped using the AIR pump. This discussion applies to those cars with an AIR pump. I will explain how the AIR pump is used with the GM dual bed 3 way catalytic converter to minimize emissions of CO, HC and NOx. My example in this video is my 3rd Gen Camaro IROC-Z with 305 Tuned Port Injection. If your engine doesn't pass an emission test, this information may help you.
