During the parliamentary sitting on 8 January, NCMP Leong Mun Wai clashed with Manpower Minister Dr Tan See Leng over remarks made by the minister. In his wrap-up speech for Workplace Fairness Bill, Tan had refuted Leong’s claim regarding underemployment, highlighting that unemployment for Singaporeans had remained low, averaging 3.2% over the past decade. He also pointed out the significant growth in the proportion of PMETs (Professionals, Managers, Executives, and Technicians) in the workforce, which increased by 34% from 2014 to 2024, surpassing the growth of foreign Employment Pass (EP) and S Pass holders. Seeking clarification from the minister, Leong questioned whether the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) had studied underemployment, arguing that low unemployment rates did not necessarily reflect the extent of underemployment in the job market. Leong also challenged the use of the PMET ratio, suggesting it was skewed by immigration, including the influx of new citizens and permanent residents, which he argued distorted the true picture of local employment. Tan defended the government's policies, asserting that the statistics demonstrated positive trends, including the growth of resident PMETs. He rejected the notion that foreign manpower had displaced local workers, emphasising that local employment continued to grow. He urged Leong to focus on the ongoing Workplace Fairness Bill, rather than engaging in broader economic debates. Leong later pressed Tan on whether immigration had influenced the PME ratio’s conclusions, but Speaker Seah Kian Peng intervened, advising Leong to pursue a specific parliamentary question for further clarification.
