Hold your breath – this is not your usual freedive. Watch as we ride a sandbag head-down to 70 meters in the thrilling Variable Weight discipline. The Variable Weight (VWT) discipline is one of the most exciting ways to freedive. There are two ways to do it: Using a sled (head up) Using a sandbag (head down), like in this video. With almost no effort on the way down, you just hold on and let gravity take you deep into the blue. In this dive, you can see the data for a 70 m descent: Almost 2 m/sec for the first 50 meters Average descent speed: 1.66 m/s Total time to 70 m: 42 seconds The speed will vary depending on the sandbag’s weight – the heavier it is, the faster you go. Because the diver spends little energy during the descent, the ascent can be done more calmly. This makes Variable Weight a great way to progressively get used to deep freedives. ⚠️ This is not for beginners – you should have at least AIDA 3, PADI Advanced Freediver, or Molchanovs Wave 2 level before attempting it. And remember: after a dive deeper than 60 m, always wait 24 hours before doing another deep descent.
