The Xmas special is finally here! Filmed it on 25/12/25, originally I wanted to upload on 26/12 but I had other plans, so I had to defer until today. Buckle up, guys, as this is going to be a wild ride! Hopefully y’all had a wonderful Christmas too, if you celebrate it. This… has got to be one of the most intense fan projects I’ve worked on so far. But it was worth it in the end! Because this fan just means too much to me, as I inherited it from my late grandparents (dad’s side). Here’s the backstory of this fan: My grandpa bought it new back in 2001, and back then he placed it in my grandparents’ bedroom when they lived in their old house. As a kid, I always enjoyed seeing it whenever I visited my grandparents, as its unique design caught my attention! I gave these fans a nickname, which is the “Donut Ring Base” fans, due to the circular shape of their bases. As my grandparents’ old house didn’t have ceiling fans apart from the dining room and kitchen, this was the only fan they had in their bedroom. It remained in my grandparents’ bedroom up until they moved in 2007. While grandpa moved to another house he built near my uncle’s farm, grandma took this fan with her and used in in her bedroom, up until she came and lived with us after one of my aunts moved away. Then she continued using it up until she passed away in 2018! After my grandma passed away, this fan became another important member of my “Sentimental Fans” club. However, things went south on one day in 2019. While my maid was cleaning up the house, she accidentally knocked it over, thus resulting in it breaking its neck! That is one of the reasons why I don’t really like the donut ring base fans, as their neck joints are one of their weakest points. After that, it has been broken for quite some time. It wasn’t until recently when I had some free time, I decided to mend it! And boy was it quite a journey. Initially, I tried duct taping it, but it didn’t work as the head fell down. Then I tried supergluing it, but that didn’t work too, as it fell down again! Thankfully, my good friend @thematsushitaman recommended that I remove the motor first before applying the superglue, and that’s what I did! And thankfully this method worked as the glue could cure properly without the additional weight causing a burden to the neck joint. Although it incurred a few battle scars along the way, that just adds character to this fan! And I can feel my grandparents smiling happily up in heaven once they saw me restoring their fan. In a sense, the Donut Ring Base fans reminded me of the 2013 “Trash Can” Mac Pros, as they favored form over function in terms of their design. The partially hollow underside of the base causes it to make some rattling noises caused by vibrations, which has been like that since they were new! Not to mention the speed control knobs are easily missing too as they broke off quite easily due to their build quality. Matsushita was slowly recovering from the economic crisis of the late 90s, so it isn’t surprising that the Donut Ring Base fans were a result of cost-cutting. However credit where credit is due, their design was rather futuristic and timeless! They were made from 2001-2003, where Matsushita decided to revert to the conventional styled table fans in 2003, possibly after backlash from customers due to the multiple Achilles’ heels that they had. All in all it’s a good idea and design (apart from the semi-hollow base) but poorly executed.
