FRANZ MARC - Life, Works & Painting Style | Great Artists simply Explained in 3 minutes!

Franz Marc was a German painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. He is considered one of the most important Expressionist painters in Germany and is known for his animal motifs. He was born in Munich, Germany, in 1880. Marc decided to take up his father's profession and studied at the Munich Art Academy. Together with Wassily Kandinski, he was a co-founder of the artists' group "Der Blaue Reiter” (the blue rider), which shaped Expressionism in Germany. He also wrote art theory for various publications. He had a love triangle with Marie Schnür and Maria Franck. First he married Marie Schnür, later they divorced and he married Maria Franck. Both marriages remained childless. At the beginning of the First World War, he was drafted and tragically died at the front in 1916, aged just 36, from a shell fragment. While his early works were still naturalistic, his well-known painting style, which is characterized by strong colors, clear lines and a pronounced emotional expressiveness, later prevailed. He often combined elements of Cubism and Fauvism, but developed an unmistakable pictorial language. The motifs in Marc's works were often animals, especially horses. He believed that animals had a purer and deeper connection to nature and tried to capture this spiritual connection in his paintings. The painting "The Tower of Blue Horses" is considered one of his masterpieces. The work shows his penchant for symbolic representations and mystical elements. It was shown at the Nazi exhibition "Degenerate Art" in Munich in 1937, but due to massive protests against the defamation of Marc, who had died in the war, it was taken down again. Directly from the exhibition, the war criminal Hermann Göring appropriated the work took the work, which was considered lost after 1945. Another important work is "The Yellow Cow", which shows his intense connection to nature and his preference for vivid colors. The painting "The large Blue Horses" is an outstanding example of Expressionism. It shows his fascination with horses and his preference for vivid colors. Although his artistic career spanned only fifteen years, his life's work comprises more than 244 oil paintings and over 300 other works, including numerous drawings, watercolors, postcards, glass paintings and sculptures.
