MASON, Ohio (WKRC) - Mason Middle School students are rallying around one of their own in her fight against leukemia. Their goal is to raise $30,000 to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Maya Collins. Maya would be finishing up eighth grade at Mason Middle School this year, but right now she is receiving treatment through a clinical trial at St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis. Maya has acute myeloid leukemia. She was first diagnosed in 2011, had a bone marrow transplant, was getting better, but then relapsed and had to have another bone marrow transplant. She was in remission for almost four years up until summer 2016 when she relapsed again with AML. As Maya focuses on treatment, the students at Mason Middle School are focused on raising that $30,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in her honor and in honor of other Mason families impacted by blood cancer. The National Junior Honor Society is in charge of the Pennies for Patients fundraising campaign. Right now, they have raised about $23,000. They have been raising money through 'Maya Strong' t-shirt sales, raffles, dine and donate nights and classroom competitions. "I am just hoping, at least for our kids, for our students, to see that they can make a difference. Whether it's a penny at a time, or even just a thought, letting Maya know they're thinking about her," said Lauren Richardson. "I think the biggest thing you can do and to teach students at this age is to stand for something and to believe in something, and I think this campaign does that, and it showed our National Junior Honor Society students that, if you put your mind to it, you can make great things happen." You can help them close the gap to their goal Thursday night by dining at the Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern in Mason. And when you show them this flyer, 15 percent of your bill will go toward their fundraiser.
