Oregon health care workers kneel in memory of George Floyd at Portland's Pioneer Square

A group of apparent health care professionals joined protesters June 2 for a peaceful demonstration around 6 p.m. at Pioneer Square in downtown Portland. The group led protesters in a silent kneel with their fists raised in the air in response to the murder of George Floyd, a black man who was killed by a Minneapolis police officer May 25. Kelley Butler, a medical student who attends University of California-Irvine Medical Center, said the group knelt for nine minutes — roughly the same amount of time that Floyd was restrained with the officer’s knee to his neck — as a representation of the pain that black people experience every day. “This should be the beginning, or the start, of continued conversations, actions and thought," Butler said.
