The Department of Energy says it is “hoping for the best” but “preparing for the worst” as oil firms are expected to increase their fuel prices by around P17 to P24 per liter this coming week. During a House committee hearing on Monday, March 9, Energy Secretary Sharon Garin clarifies that her agency can only monitor oil prices, but does not have the power to regulate them. “What’s positive about the news today is that they have agreed to stagger it, in the sense that in a whole week, hindi isang bagsakan na P20 agad tomorrow. Some companies have agreed na P2.50 and P2.50 lang, some companies have agreed P10 for tomorrow. It’s all different, that’s why it’s hard to monitor,” she says .
