In 1000 BCE, King David established Jerusalem as the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Israel. It later fell under various empires, including Babylonian, Persian, Roman, and Ottoman rule, each leaving marks on its development. After World War I, Britain governed Jerusalem under the 1922 League of Nations mandate. Following Israel’s 1948 independence, the city was divided between Israeli West Jerusalem and Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem. In the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured East Jerusalem and later annexed it, a move not widely recognized internationally. Since then, the city has remained a focal point of Israeli-Palestinian tensions and global diplomacy. Jerusalem today functions as Israel’s proclaimed capital, housing major governmental institutions. However, many foreign embassies remain in Tel Aviv, reflecting the city’s sensitive geopolitical status in international affairs. The population includes Jews, Muslims, and Christians, though social and economic divisions persist.
