From the producers and director of 'Journey to Kathmandu' comes a Barang Films and Little Scarlet Films collaboration, 'Elvis of Cambodia', a film about the power and legacy of one of SE Asia's finest musicians, Sinn Sisamouth. At a time when it's neighbor, Vietnam was deeply entrenched in war, Cambodia was a shining beacon of civility, artistry and beauty. In the mid-70s, everything was forever changed as the Khmer Rouge regime came to power and destroyed nearly all of its country's culture and nearly a third of its populations. Among the executed were its lawyers, doctors, and its artists, included the beloved Sisamouth. This film explores how a regime could kill a messenger but they couldn't kill the message. Today, Sisamouth is still revered and recognized as the Cambodian people's most important singer. Through the eyes of Cambodian, Sin Chanchaya, music teacher and son of the famous musician, and Khmer-American Saron Khut, who runs the Mekong Bistro restaurant in Portland, Oregon, we see just how and why the music survived and is perhaps more relevant today than other before.
