Francis Scott Key (1779-1843) was an American lawyer, author, and amateur poet who is best known for writing the lyrics to the United States' national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Born in Maryland, Key became a successful attorney and was active in politics, serving as a U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. During the War of 1812, Key was taken captive by the British and witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Inspired by the American flag still flying at the fort the next morning, Key wrote the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner." He died in 1843 and is buried in Maryland.
