10 things to know about the Oscar-winning Hungarian-born screenwriter. Emeric Pressburger was born on 5 December 1902 in Miskolc. He studied engineering in Timisoara, Prague and Stuttgart, but history intervened: the Trianon peace treaty and growing anti-Semitism prevented him from completing his studies. He began his film career at the UFA in Berlin, where he worked in the scriptwriting department and contributed to dozens of films. However, Hitler's rise to power forced him to move on again, and he was sent to England, where Alexander Korda took him under his wing and introduced him to Michael Powell. He and the English director formed a company called The Archers, and their legendary creative partnership lasted seventeen years. The unique tone of their work, their inventive dialogue and their startling visuals have made them fans of everyone from the King of England to Martin Scorsese.
