The Battle of Molodi (1572) was one of the most decisive and overlooked battles in Russian history. In this episode, we examine how Ivan the Terrible’s forces massacred 120,000 Mongols — or at least how Russian chronicles described the destruction of the Crimean Khanate’s army south of Moscow. Just one year after Moscow was burned by Devlet I Giray, the Crimean Khan returned with what sources claim was a massive Mongol-descended horde. But near the village of Molodi, Russian commanders Mikhail Vorotynsky and Dmitry Khvorostinin deployed a revolutionary tactic — the gulyay-gorod wagon fortress — and executed a daring night maneuver that shattered the invading army. Was it truly 120,000 Mongols? Modern historians debate the number, estimating between 40,000–60,000. In this video, we examine both the Russian chronicles and modern scholarship to understand what really happened in the five-day battle that may have saved Russia from collapse. This is the story of Molodi 1572 — the destruction of the Crimean Horde, the survival of Moscow, and the dark aftermath that saw Ivan turn against the very general who saved him. The Battle of Molodi changed the balance of power between Russia and the Mongol successor states forever. Without this victory, Russian expansion into Siberia may never have happened. #Molodi1572 #ivantheterrible #Mongols #russianhistory #BattleOfMolodi #historyexplained
