A Woman's Journey: Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Gut problems can be painful and disruptive to our daily lives. Gastroenterologist Aline Charabaty defines characteristics of irritable bowel syndrome, small intestinal bacterial growth, irritable bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) and Celiac Disease; discusses their clinical presentation and implications; and highlights new research and treatments. Dr. Aline Charabaty is Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She completed medical school at St. Joseph University in Lebanon, and her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Georgetown University Medical Center, where she joined the Division of Gastroenterology as a faculty member and established and led the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center for thirteen years. In January 2019 she joined the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to establish the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital. She has been named a Washingtonian Top Doctors by her peers for consecutive years. Dr. Charabaty is a strong advocate for improved education and access to care for patients living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. She chaired the Greater Washington, D.C./Virginia Crohn's & Colitis Foundation Mission Committee from 2012-2019 and served on the Foundation’s National Scientific Advisory Committee, Patient Education Committee and Physician Education Committee. She was recognized for her work for the inflammatory bowel disease community in 2020 when she received the Excellence in Medicine Award. She currently serves on the Foundation’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and on the Northeast Regional Planning Committee for patient education. She was a member of the Oversight Committee for Promoting Access and Care Through Centers of Excellence (PACE) program as well as a member of the Women in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Award Committee for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. Dr. Charabaty has numerous peer-reviewed publications and is an invited speaker at regional, national and international conferences. She is involved in educational and advocacy activities and committees with national and international gastroenterological societies. She is the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Governor of Washington, D.C., a member of the ACG Legislative and Public Policy Council and represents the ACG at the Digestive Disease National Coalition. She was the co-director of the ACG Eastern Regional Course in 2021. She served as a member of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Diversity Committee and is currently serving as a Vice-Chair of the AGA Research Foundation. Dr. Charabaty serves on the editorial board of Crohn’s & Colitis 360, an online journal of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and on the board of Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News. Dr. Charabaty uses social media to promote medical education and to amplify her advocacy efforts in gastroenterology. She is the founder of @MondayNightIBD, a Twitter forum that brings clinicians together to discuss the management of complex inflammatory bowel disease cases. She received the Healio Gastroenterology Disruptive Innovator Award for this initiative during ACG 2019. Dr. Charabaty is a strong advocate for diversity in gastroenterology, women in medicine and work-life integration.
