At the time of your surgery, were you scared or nervous at all? Did the doctor tell you about how much of your past difficulty you would be able to recover? QQY: I was pretty scared at the time. When I first got injured I had doubts about whether or not I’d be able to recover to my original state. When I went to the hospital, the doctor looked at the scans and told me that it wasn’t too bad. They just had to fix the stuck ligaments and torn muscles. Thus, the surgery wasn’t too scary, and they told me that once my arm full recovers, there won’t be anymore problems with it. After the surgery my arm was stiff and it hurt quite a bit. It was scary as I was trying to recover putting pressure on my arm, so I just tried bit by bit. I knew that I had to recover, since this year is pretty important, so I encourage myself and persevere through the struggles. They said that I helped Fujian qualify a team to the National Games. But I wasn’t the only one that had challenges this year. It was through the hard work of everyone on our team that we were able to qualify. There are two big competitions this year, the National Games and World Championships. What goals do you have for these competitions? QQY: For the World Championships, since it’s a post-Olympic year, many of the strongest gymnasts around the world will be absent from the competition. So I want to go out there and do my best, fight for a podium finish. Obviously, my biggest goal would be to win the gold medal there. For National Games, I want to win a lot of golds! I have many strong events, and I want to be able to perform my most difficult routines for everyone. Not only do you have to deal with recovering from your surgery, you are also faced with puberty and growth. How are you dealing with these challenges? Do you have confidence that you will overcome these obstacles? QQY: Before puberty, I could never imagine the difficulties that I have to face now. But now that the day has come, I realized that the problem wasn’t as big as I expected. All I can do is try my best every day to slowly overcome this challenge. There are lots of different obstacles I have to face, and every day I just do the most difficult preparations for myself, inching closer to recovering my skills and routines. Everyone thinks that you are a very determined girl who loves the sport of gymnastics. Paris was regrettable, with you not winning any golds. Did you shed any tears when you went home to your parents? QQY: My parents and family never pressured me to win great results. All they want is for me to be healthy. Since I didn’t really meet their wishes successfully, every time my mom thinks about it she feels sad, and I’m always sad with her. I feel like I always have two voices in my head fighting with each other. One side is saying, “I’ve already worked so hard! Why can’t this gold medal be mine??”. But the other side is saying, “Don’t leave regrets. You already performed your very best routine at the Olympic bars final and performed it to everyone. Why do the results matter so much? You can always go back and prove yourself again.” In a few days, you will be turning 18. Do you have any birthday wishes? QQY: I don’t want any particular gifts. I just want to stay healthy and be able to perform my best at each competition and show the world what I can do. Each gymnast’s dream is the same- the Olympic Games. There are still many years until the Los Angeles Olympics. You will already by 21 years old by then. Who do you wish to become during this time period? What goals do you have? QQY: I hope that by then, I can be a good team leader that can lead both my older and younger teammates. I hope that I as a team we can all go and fight for a medal together. 邱祺緣
