The Dee Dee Jackson Foundation (DDJF) is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that shines a light on loss and grief and how it impacts our lives in negative ways, especially for children. We are here to provide hope, resources and a community so no child feels alone in their grief. 1 in 5 children will experience the death of someone close to them by age 18. (Kenneth Doka, Editor of OMEGA, Journal of Death and Dying) How The Foundation Started – Turning Grief into Positive Action DDJF was founded by three brothers, Taj, Taryll, and TJ Jackson along with executive producer/showrunner Henri Hebert and former ABC executive, Lillian Lim while filming the docu-series for Lifetime “The Jacksons: Next Generation”. Taj, Taryll and TJ were born into the famous Jackson family musical dynasty. The brothers inherited their talent from their father Tito, but it was their mother Dee Dee who instilled in them the discipline to hone their craft. She was their best friend and their hero, a role model who tirelessly donated her time and resources to a number of charitable causes. Tragically, Dee Dee was murdered when they were still teenagers and young adults. Fast forward 20 years later, while filming a TV show about their lives, the brothers were ready to come to terms with their mother’s passing. To honor their mother’s spirit of positivity, selflessness and grace, they are now dedicated to building a meaningful and lasting pathway to giving back through the foundation — continuing to make their mother proud. Hands-On Programs to Help Kids The Foundation has taken a hands-on approach to develop music therapy programs for vulnerable young people. Working with Ronald M. Borczon, MT-BC, MM, NMT, who founded the internationally renowned Music Therapy Department at California State University, Northridge in 1984, the programs aim to reduce the psychological effects of trauma and provide participants emotional and cognitive resources for coping with their experiences. We are proud to partner with Boys & Girls Club of Watts/Willowbrook to bring our Music Heals: “Rhythm of Hope” (for ages 7-12) and “My Story, Our Song” (for ages 13-18) Music Therapy programs. Each year, this Boys & Girls Club location reaches nearly 2,000 children ages 7 to 18 years old from the Watts, Willowbrook and Compton communities – one of the most underserved regions in the nation. Over 6 weeks, children and program staff –including a board certified music therapist – work collaboratively to compose and record original songs as a tool to help cope with grief and loss. This creative process allows the children a safe place to express their story of loss and to find hope. Equally important, it shows children that they are not alone. Grief has no color, no age, no gender, and no economics. Regardless of who or where we are, grief and loss impacts all of us. Children around the world are suffering from hardship of great loss. There are between 150-200 million orphans in the world, 8 to 12 million of them live in institutional care. On any given day, 39,000 children are forced to leave their homes and live on the street because of abuse by or death of a parent. As adults, we have difficulty moving through loss and grief, now imagine what it is like for a child? Our children need help. Community awareness and support help children heal from loss and excel in life. Help us help children in need. You can #makeadifference today by donating to our #MusicHeals #MusicTherapy so we can continue bringing our program to more children in need. Our Music Heals Music Therapy programs are offered at no charge and are 100% funded by contributions.. A donation of any amount will make an enormous impact on a child’s life and empower them to grieve, heal and grow.
