This piece was inpspired by a character out of Charles Dickens' novel "Little Dorrit." John Chivery is a minor character, one who is noble and heroic, a gentleman not of birth, but of nature. He has the misfortune of falling in love with Amy Dorrit, the main character of the novel, who does not return his affection. John Chivery writes his own epitaph after seeing Amy Dorrit fall in love with Arthur Clenam, the main secondary protagonist in the book. This epitaph is the inspiration for this piece. The piece begins with an introduction, hinting at Amy's theme, using similar motives in a similar time signature, before transitioning into John Chivery's theme, which is mellow and heroic at the same time. The emotions reach a head before John catches a glimpse of Amy taking care of his ill rival, Arthur Clenam. John turns and walks away, but the listener focuses on Amy Dorrit, hearing her theme played by the solo Clarinet; the very lullaby first played for her by her uncle on the clarinet when she was born. The theme is sweet but subdued, representing the tragic circumstances under which she was born, but also representing the ray of light she brought to the Marshalsea prison and the people whose lives were blessed by her. My telling of the story is not exactly canon, but it is how I imagine the scene happening in real time. Thanks for listening!
