Bangladesh's Supreme Court scales back job quotas that triggered days of violent protest

Supreme Court in Bangladesh has dismissed a ruling by the High Court to reinstate a job quotas system. In June, the High Court reinstated a system reserving 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence. After violent protests this week, the Supreme Court suspended that ruling. A nationwide curfew remains in place and has been extended 'indefinitely' as security services try to quell protests. Detail on the top court's ruling will become clearer in the coming hours. At least 114 people have been killed, and thousands injured in a violent crackdown by the police and military.
