Welcome to day 5 of DragoNate's Christmas demo game series! The 5th game demo I played during the Steam Game Festival is Acid Knife. Why is it called Acid Knife? Well, your main weapon, or at least the majority weapon, is a knife & game design is like that of acid. In the psychedelic form, of course. Now to start off here, I am terrible at platformers. Most of them anyway. Acid Knife is a rather challenging platformer, in my opinion, because you have an inventory system & item mechanics rather than abilities & a single weapon. You will not always have a weapon. You can lose your weapon. You have to use your limited inventory to carry essential items to the exit. Yes, you can assign an item to a quick-slot (mouse button 2) that you can use even if that item is not equipped. Thankfully, there is also a context button that will perform a given action as long as the context is provided. For example, if you're low on health, press Q to use potion without equipping it. Damaged weapon on the floor & you hold a flint? Press Q to repair the weapon. Quite useful. Enemies are challenging & there are tons of mechanics. Slower, more intentional side-scrolling combat, with an emphasis on positioning and improvisation. Taking cues from God Hand, your set of verbs (attack, block, dodge, eat, listen, talk, play the flute, teleport, kiss?) all come directly from your current set of items, and are changed out on the fly. Design the perfect set of moves to approach any given encounter, then improvise like hell as a pivotal item is knocked from your hands and winds up blocked behind a rotting spider.
