The basic stance in Aikido is called hanmi and can be translated as half body. It relates to the fact that we expose half of our body to the opponent. At the origin of this stance we have the practice with the sword. This position supports very well movements with the sword, we can also easily turn and change direction. Splitting the weight of our body 50/50 between both feet helps us to start moving any foot without additional delays. Another advantage is the possibility to support a lot of pressure in the front-back axis, while we have to keep in mind that the position isn't that strong when being pushed from the side. Depending on the side we present to the opponent (and the foot that is placed in front) we talk about migi hanmi (右半身 right side in front) or hidari hanmi (左半身 left side in front).
