If your a baby boomer and if you’re a dog lover as I am, and like seeing dogs on tv more than likely you remember watching Spuds MacKenzie on the 1980’s Budweiser Super Bowl commercials. Bud Light first introduced a "super party animal named Spuds MacKenzie," during the Super Bowl commercials in 1987 and the dog was an immediate hit. He also appeared a Bud ad during the 1980’s Olympics. Spuds was everywhere — on t-shirts, posters, lamps, and more Shortly after ads started appearing, Mothers Against Drunk Driving launched a campaign against Spuds, and some schools began banning apparel featuring Spuds. Republican Senator Strom Thurmond accused Bud Light of using Spuds as a mascot to encourage under-aged drinking and glamorize the use of alcohol. In November 1987, Thurmond took to the Senate floor waving a stuffed "Spuds MacKenzie" doll and demanded that Anheuser-Busch halt the campaign. Due to some opposition his time in the spotlight was short-lived and Budweiser retired Spuds in 1989.
