■ 2024 Future Planning: The Great Transition – Interview with Chris Miller, Author of Chip War High-performance GPUs drive AI advancements, and AI technology, in turn, attracts capital and talent—a phenomenon unfolding in the heart of innovation, Silicon Valley. "Over the past few years, or even the last decade, if you look at the progress in AI, you'll find that most advancements haven’t come from better algorithms, software, or data, but from better semiconductors. Semiconductors enable AI to compute far more efficiently." – Chris Miller, historian, author of Chip War, and professor at Tufts University, USA A fierce competition for AI dominance has begun in Silicon Valley. Nearly all the major tech companies in the top 10 by market capitalization are diving into the AI race, pouring vast sums into developing proprietary AI models, and aggressively adopting supercomputers and data centers. Just as Apple revolutionized the world with the iPhone, who will emerge as the winner in the AI era? The so-called “war of capital” has already begun, with AI-related investments by major tech firms exploding in recent years. "Massive investments are currently underway across all sectors of the AI supply chain. Data centers are being planned across the globe, including in the U.S., China, and Malaysia. These centers will require an enormous amount of semiconductors." The so-called “monster chip,” Blackwell, costs about $50,000 per GPU. An AI accelerator equipped with two Blackwell GPUs and a CPU costs over $100,000. Hundreds or even thousands of these accelerators are needed to build an AI data center, and despite not yet being officially launched, Blackwell's first-year production has already sold out. "In the past, it was all about smartphones and PCs, but now AI is reshaping the semiconductor industry. This is why the stock prices of companies like TSMC, NVIDIA, and SK Hynix, which produce these critical chips, have skyrocketed. The semiconductors they create are at the heart of the AI revolution." AI technology is set to revolutionize services, manufacturing, and industries at large, with semiconductors serving as the driving engine behind this transformation. "Given NVIDIA’s astonishing success over the past few years, betting against them isn’t wise. However, with a 95% market share in large-scale AI system training, they’re bound to face competitors eventually. And as the AI market grows, other semiconductor manufacturers will have ample opportunities to carve out their share of the market." ■ 2024 KBS Future Planning: The Great Transition – Episode 1: Who Will Become Wealthy? In the era of AI transformation, technology is undeniably the key. In this rapidly changing world, who monopolizes which technology, and how quickly, will determine the balance of power. We have already entered the AI age and stand on the brink of the Beyond AI era. If the future is inevitable, shouldn’t we seize the opportunities it brings? Through the success stories of global scientists who serve as key players in cutting-edge industries and have captured wealth, fame, and even fandom, this program explores who will emerge as the key talent in the Beyond AI era and which industries will dominate this future landscape. NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang has risen as the AI industry’s top shareholder. Why are we so fascinated by him? His every move makes headlines, his influence shakes the New York Stock Exchange, and this year, he became the world’s 13th wealthiest individual. In Taiwan, his popularity rivals that of a pop star. The three leading figures in the AI semiconductor industry—Jensen Huang of NVIDIA, Lisa Su of AMD, and Morris Chang of TSMC—are all Taiwanese Americans. Notably, Jensen and Lisa are fifth cousins, competing for the top spot in the AI semiconductor world. How has Taiwan, the hub of the semiconductor industry, enabled these individuals to achieve wealth, fame, and even fandom? At the center of it all is AI. ※ This video originally aired as part of [2024 Future Planning: The Great Transition] on November 9, 2024. #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #NVIDIA ✔ KBS Documentary | KBS Official YouTube Channel [KBS Doc] 🔔Subscribe 👍Like ➡️ [ / @kbsdocumentary ] 📝Inquiries: [email protected] Copyright ⓒ KBS.
