Mardi Gras Indians (also known as Black Masking Indians) are black carnival revelers in New Orleans, Louisiana, who dress up for Mardi Gras in suits influenced by Native American ceremonial apparel. Collectively, their organizations are called "tribes". There are about 38 tribes which range in size from half a dozen to several dozen members. The groups are largely independent, but a pair of umbrella organizations loosely coordinates the Uptown Indians and the Downtown Indians. In addition to Mardi Gras Day, many of the tribes also parade on Saint Joseph's Day (March 19) and the Sunday nearest to Saint Joseph's Day ("Super Sunday"). Traditionally, these were the only times Mardi Gras Indians were seen in public in full regalia. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival began the practice of hiring tribes to appear at the Festival as well. In recent years it has become more common to see Mardi Gras Indians at other festivals and parades in the city. Big Chief Victor Harris of the Mandingo Warriors Retires After 59 Years as a Black Masking Indian. Big Chief Victor Harris, also known as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi, today we are honoring 59 years as a Black Masking Indian. He will be retiring as BIG CHIEF but not retiring from the culture! Harris began masking at the age of 15 as flag boy of the Yellow Pocahontas, led by Big Chief Allison “Tootie” Montana, before becoming Big Chief of his own tribe—the Mandingo Warriors—as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi 40 years ago. This marked Big Chief Fi Yi Yi’s legacy as the longest continuously masking Black Masking Indian and his distinct impact on the culture and the city. Congrats THE BIG CHIEF for being an Inspiration to every Masking Indian. We were told that this was happening from people all over this Super Sunday and Uptown as well that we needed to speak to him. With everyone wanting to celebrate his legacy, that shows the IMPACT that Big Chief that on that community and the community of New Orleans as a whole! So with that said, we at the Misadventures of Team A.J. would like to give a Massive thank you! To the BIG CHIEF Victor Harris for EVERYTHING you have done, being the Standard for the Mardi Gras Indians! We would like to thank YOU for watching! We truly appreciate everyone of you! Keep Being AWESOME! 💜💚💛 The Misadventures of Team A.J.
