Jacqui Lambie questioned the Government in the Senate about Australia’s approach to regulating artificial intelligence. In 2024, the Government promised to establish a permanent AI advisory body to help guide the safe development and use of artificial intelligence in Australia. After 15 months and $200,000 spent identifying experts to sit on it, the body was scrapped in February. Instead, the Government announced it will establish an AI Safety Institute in early 2026. Senator Lambie questioned how an institute with no regulatory powers can protect Australians from the risks of AI. She also raised concerns about the use of AI inside government processes, including reports that some public submissions are now being assessed by AI before a human review. During Question Time she asked: • Why Australia is relying on existing laws written before AI existed to regulate the technology. • Which AI models the Government is using, including tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot. • Whether Australians’ data could be shared with global tech companies. The Minister confirmed the Government is relying on existing regulatory frameworks and said he was not in a position to confirm which AI models are being used, but would take the question on notice.
