This film shows my technique for greatly increasing the ramification of my deciduous bonsai. Partial defoliation is particularly useful for species such as Fagus/Beech, Quercus/Oaks and Carpinus/Hornbeam but is also suitable for all deciduous species across the board. Don't start this work too early as your trees will need a full canopy of leaves immediately after their Spring flush to encourage vigour. However, from early June (8-10 weeks after leaf-break) they can be partially defoliated until early July. Defoliation of any kind is demanding on the resources of a bonsai, avoid if your tree is weak or in poor health.
