Happy Sunday! On 10/03/2025 at 0843 hours, I, Officer Junior, responded tp 615 N. Bailey St. for a ambulance assist. Upon my arrival, I observed Merrick Gaines walking south on N. Bailey St., KW ran up to my vehicle and stated that Merrick was the guy who requested the ambulance and he stole his tape measure. I advised KW that I would return his tape measure if Gaines had the tape measure. I made contact with Merrick Gaines. He stated that he needed to see a doctor. I asked what he needed help with. Gaines became upset and stated that he needed help with his head. He stated that he had a firearm in his right pocket (pink Taurus 9mm S/N 20702B). Because he stated that he needed to see a doctor due to having psychological issues, I removed the firearm from his person for officer safety and secured it in my patrol vehicle. Upon the arrival of other officers, I requested his name. He stated something that I could not make out. I asked him to say his name again and he said it in a manner that I could not understand. I asked for his date of birth and he stated that he did not legally have to answer me. I told him to place his hands behind his back and he started to tense his arms. After a brief struggle, officer's were able to place him into cuff, obtain his name, and date of birth. Medic arrived on scene and he stated that he was mental issues. He declined medical treatment. He started to struggle with officer's again and I advised Officer Hester and Orton to place him in the rear of my vehicle. Officers then placed him in the rear of the vehicle. He request I turn on the air conditioning, I check the air conditioning and confirmed that it was turn on. He started to hit his head on the cage of my patrol vehicle. I transported him to Unity Hospital. While en route to Unity, Gaines stated that he was going to beat my ass when I uncuffed him. At Unity, Gaines continued to resist officers from securing him to the bed. He was yelling and cursing while in the presence of the patients.   He was cleared and transported to PCRDF. While enroute to PCRDF, Gaines continued to threaten to beat me. Upon arrival, to PCRDF he continued to hit his head on the cage of my vehicle because I was too slow removing him from the vehicle and taking him to be processed. I entered the firearm into property as Confiscated due to him having a previous Domestic Battering 3rd degree conviction on 06-23-2013 out of Saline Circuit Court.
