An intumescent white cataract is characterized by a fluid-filled capsular bag containing liquefied lens cortex. This accumulation increases intra-lenticular pressure, heightening the risk of the Argentinian Flag Sign—a phenomenon where the anterior capsule tears abruptly and extends to the zonular attachments. When the capsule is stained with trypan blue, the resulting tear through the white cataract mimics the blue-white-blue stripes of the Argentinian flag. To reduce this risk, various techniques have been developed to decompress the lens and equalize the pressure gradient, enhancing surgical control and minimizing the likelihood of capsular complications. A simple method of needle decompression can help us avoid such a complication.
