Rare footages of the life of chinese submariners on board a Song-class conventional powered attack submarine accompanied with nice music. The Type 039 "Song-class" SSK is the PLAN submarine-force's modern backbone, with a fleet of 16 of them. It has a displacement of 2,250 tons submerged, length of 74.9 m, beam of 8.4 m and draft of 5.3 m, and is powered diesel electric plus 1 shaft air-independent stirling circle propulsion (AIP) for silent and long-duration running. It is armed with six 533mm torpedo tubes with up to 18 torpedos of the class Yu-4 (active/passive homing 15km @ 40 knots), Yu-6 wireguided torpedo (Mark 48 equivalent, range 45km @ 65 knots max) and YJ-83 submarine launched anti ship cruise missile (200km range, Mach 0.9 cruise and terminal engagement speed of Mach 1.5, active homing), as well as up to 36 naval mines (replacing the other loadout in the stores). It carries a Chinese development of French Thomson-CSF TSM-2233 active/passive medium frequency attack sonar in the bow, and conformal low frequency passive sonars. The system is further enhanced with the integration of a domestic Chinese passive ranging sonar on board, designated as H/SQG-04 sonar, as well as a I-Band surface search radar on a retractable telescopic mast (the amber display in the video) and the integrated SRW209 EW/ESM suite for passive ELINT and radar-warning/radar ranging features. The medium frequency sonar combined with the other electronics and battlefield management suites are also enabling the Song-class SSK to perform low-frequency underwater communications between surface and other subsurface assets, enhancing its combat effectiveness while operating in wolf-packs with other subs or ASW/ASuW assets. A worthwhile note: On October 26, 2006, a Chinese Song class submarine is said to have "popped up" and "surfaced within firing range of its torpedoes and missiles before being detected" within 5 nautical miles (9 km) of the carrier USS Kitty Hawk while she was operating in the Pacific Ocean. Another worthwhile note: Notice the "birthday cake" made of tropical fruits for one of the crew member.
