The Art of the Mushaf in the Twenty-first Century: Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation Mushaf

The Mushaf forms the largest body of illuminated manuscripts in the Islamic world, with various formats, pages, layouts, and calligraphic styles forming the ‘Arts of the Mushaf.’ Sultans and emperors established royal ateliers to perfect these designs and produced exquisite Mushafs. This talk introduces and presents the Thesaurus Islamicus foundation Mushaf as a new approach to developing the Arts of the Mushaf in the twenty-first century. The Mushaf is produced using digital technology yet continues a tradition that has prevailed for centuries. The talk is presented by Heba Nayel Barakat, Senior Curator and researcher of Islamic Art and Architecture, with a view to inviting young artists, designers, calligraphers, and developers to anticipate the development of Islamic arts in the twenty-first century.
