Asante funeral rites differ slightly from Fante funeral rights. ‘Edwaade3’ is when items are presented to the extended family of the deceased to be used in preparing the body for burial. It is believed that once a person does, his spirit leaves to a place called ‘Asamando’ which translates to mean ‘A place for the dead.’ Just like in the flesh, the spirit also needs certain basic items to be able to live on the spirit realm/Asamando. Items like water, soap, mat, flowers, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, local sponges, local toilet rolls, buckets, towels, cloths, bedsheets, etc are all presented to the family of the deceased as a form of giving Edwaade3. Unlike the Asante Edwaade3 in the case where the deceased was married, the spouse and in-laws presents these items to the extended family before his/her children do (if the deceased had children). In a Fante Edwaade3, it is the children and in-laws of the deceased who present items before his/ her spouse can also present theirs.
