Welcome to the first in a series of talks I am giving at the Twin Cities Astrology Meetup about the fascinating concept of planetary dignity in astrology. In this video, I explain the different types of power or "dignity" planets can have in your chart so you can deepen your understanding of how planets gain or lose strength and how that impacts your chart. We then take a deep dive on the first type of essential dignity, "domicile," which simply means when a planet is in its own sign in a birth chart it has extra power to accomplish the tasks of the house and sign that it is in as well as any other houses that it rules. Whether you’re new to astrology or you’ve been studying for a while, this talk will give you insights into how understanding planetary dignity can add nuance to your readings. We’re starting with the big picture today—how the planets rule different signs and how that rulership can help you interpret both your natal chart and transits. I’ll explain how to think about planets as actors, signs as the energy or environment they move through, and houses as the stage where it all plays out. Plus, we’ll dive into examples like how a big transit, such as Pluto hitting your Moon, can activate multiple areas of your life. This is grounded in Hellenistic astrology, which my co-host Nicole and I both studied extensively. It’s a rich and complex system, but once you get past the basics, understanding topics like planetary dignity can really help you unlock the deeper layers of your chart. We’ll also touch on essential dignity (like rulership and exaltation), accidental dignity (based on house placement and aspects), and even planetary joy.
