A film on TRAFFIC’s pioneering initiative on sniffer dog training programme for combating wildlife crime in India (Duration: 8.5 minutes) TRAFFIC’s film on its sniffer dog training programme in India captures the journey of the sniffer dog from the day it is enrolled into the training till its deployment. The film gives an overview of illegal wildlife trade in India and the threat it poses to our endangered wildlife. It also highlights the important role that sniffer dogs play in combating wildlife crime and the need to effectively use the dog squads for patrolling and conducting seizures and arrests. The film has been shot and directed by a well known wildlife filmmaker Mr Himanshu Malhotra and produced by TRAFFIC with support from WWF-India. The film encapsulates the experiences of the dog trainers and handlers who have been involved in the sniffer dog training programme and have been part of the dog squads in the field. Dr Shekhar Kumar Niraj, Head- TRAFFIC India talks about the need to enhance the sniffer dog training programme and raise and train more sniffer dog squads’ inorder to strengthen enforcement for curbing wildlife crime. He further adds that through the film TRAFFIC hopes to raise support for the sniffer dog training programme so that more dog squads can be trained and deployed. It is TRAFFIC’s vision to have atleast 4-5 dog squads in each state for combating nefarious wildlife activities. In 2008, TRAFFIC embarked on an important journey to help raise and train sniffer dog squads to strengthen anti-poaching and anti-trafficking measures of the forest departments and other enforcement agencies concerned with wildlife protection. It was the first time that sniffer dogs were being trained and used for detecting and preventing wildlife crime in India. Till 2015, TRAFFIC has been instrumental in getting 27 dog squads trained and deployed in nine states across India. TRAFFIC India is a programme division of WWF-India and the country office of TRAFFIC, a global wildlife trade monitoring network. Read more at http://support.wwfindia.org/super_sni...
