The life of a Victorian 'Slavey' maid was hard, lonely and often dangerous. Pauper girls were discharged from the workhouse at a mere 14 years of age and had to find a means to survive. They could be recruited as slaveys and paid little to wash floors, clothes and cook food; or they could enter directly into service, often escaping the drudgery of a poor life and ill treatment at the hands of an alcoholic parent. In either case, slaveys were young, poorly paid and often worked at physically demanding tasks from dawn to dusk.
