In this video, I share how the Church of Theurgy celebrates Saturnalia 2025 as a family holiday alongside Christmas. Saturnalia is an ancient Roman festival centered on freedom, symbolized by cutting Saturn’s woolen binds and, as Porphyry says, “the freeing of souls into immortality.” Because the religious work of Theurgy is largely interior, we have the freedom to shape outward traditions that serve the soul—so we celebrate Saturnalia on the same days as Christmas, allowing our children to rejoice with everyone else while honoring an older sacred story. I explain the mythic background of Saturn’s golden age—when there was no slave or master and all were equals—and how we imitate that freedom in our home: the ruled become rulers, children command their parents, and Fool and Wise Man eat at the same table. From this, we keep several living customs: the King of Saturnalia chosen by an almond hidden in a holiday cake; a day of games and friendly competition (board games, card games, video games); and our Treasury Jar, where we store written aspirations and accomplishments as symbols of immaterial wealth to be read on the next Saturnalia. Finally, I describe the Ransom of Saturn—a sun-themed dessert given to someone of the King’s choosing, echoing Rhea’s ransom-stone that saved Zeus, and offered with a prayer that those who partake may be freed from their burdens. The video closes with a short Latin hymn: “Saturne pater, rex aurei saeculi…” asking Saturn, father and king of the golden age, to bless our Saturnalia so that we may be free, equal, and loosed from our weights.
