Aadi month is such an auspicious month that marks the commencement of dawn or nighttime for the Devas (demi-gods), known as Dakshinayana Punyakalam, which starts in mid July and ends in mid August. During Dakshinayana, the air becomes cool and the digestive system is stimulated. Appetite will increase and one can enjoy good nutritive foods during this season. Heavy fats like butter, ghee is good for health. We have been practicing eating healthy foods like Uzhundanchoru, uzunndankali, uzhundankanji, payaru kanji etc during this period. In South Indian Amman (Devi Maa) Temples, we do have the practice of serving aadi kanji or aadi koozh on days like Aadi Chevvai (Aadi Tuesdays) and Aadi Velli (Aadi Fridays) I am preparing such healthy Aadi kanji or Bhavani Kanji. I really don't know why they call it Bhavani Kanji in Tamilnadu-Kerala border. It May because this Kanji is served in Amman Temples..but please do try this yummy kanji with the goodness of red rice, greengram; veggies like carrot, beans, sweetcorn, etc; and ghee, jeera, and coconut milk.
