(26 Feb 1997) T/I: 10:43:11 Hundreds of Palestinians took part in a sit-in strike on Wednesday (26/2) in the West Bank town of Tulkarem to protest the confiscation of land by the Israeli government. Faisal Husseini, the Palestinian Minister for Jerusalem Affairs, visited Israel's parliament and made a last-minute appeal for the scrapping of a plan to build a new Jewish neighbourhood in Arab east Jerusalem. He warned it could disrupt the Middle East peace process. Husseini's visit came hours before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to approve a plan to build 6,500 homes for Jews in the Har Homa area of east Jerusalem. Israeli supporters of the leftwing Peace Now movement demonstrated outside the Prime Minister's office building in a protest against the new construction plan. In Gaza City, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat declined to comment on the lastest Israeli expansion move.
