The Problem What happens when you take the number 1 and divide it by 1... plus itself... forever? This infinite "staircase" of divisions is known as a continued fraction. At first glance, it looks like a chaotic loop that should grow forever, but it actually hides the most famous ratio in history. The Strategy In this video, we use the "Inception Trick" to solve the unsolvable. By identifying that the infinite part of the denominator is identical to the whole expression, we can collapse the entire infinite structure into a simple quadratic equation: x^2 - x - 1 = 0. The Reveal Using the quadratic formula, we find that this infinite mess of 1s is the exact mathematical definition of The Golden Ratio (\phi), or approximately 1.618. We’ll explore why this number appears everywhere, from the petals of a flower to the spiral of a galaxy. Steps Covered: 1. Visualizing the infinite staircase of 1s. 2. Using the "Inception Trick" to set up an algebraic equation. 3. Solving the quadratic equation for the positive root. 4. Connecting the result to the Golden Ratio and its presence in nature. #GoldenRatio #MathPuzzles #InfiniteFraction #STEM #Algebra #NatureMath #MathHistory #Geometry #Phi
