Energy Trends in Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic digestion systems produce energy in the form of biogas from organic materials. In manure systems, they also serve to reduce pathogens in manure, reduce odors, degrade antibiotics, reduce emissions that contribute to climate change among a host of other benefits. The biogas produced has historically been used for direct burn applications or for electricity production. With changes to policy (specifically the Low Carbon Fuel Standard and the Renewable Fuel Standard), many systems are now converting to upgrade biogas and inject it into the the natural gas pipeline.
